Western Monk Phra Phillip Ṭhānavuḍḍho visits Wat Atamm

Phra Phillip Ṭhānavuḍḍho is staying at our Temple through the end of Vassa which ends in November. He will assist Ajahn Ritthi with this year’s Retreats, and with other Dhamma Activities. You may address him as Phra Phillip or Phra Phillip Ṭhānavuḍḍho which is his Thai Pāli ordination name

He was raised in Washington, D.C. and became a Buddhist at age 13, attending meditation classes at the Washington Buddhist Vihara. He ordained in Sri Lanka in 2013, after one year of intense training as an anagārika and another year as a samanēra, at the Na-Uyana Aranya forest temple, under the late Ven. Ariyadhamma Mahathera. In 2015, Phra Phillip relocated to Rayong, Thailand and re-ordained at Wat Lahanrai (วัดละหารไร่), living at a nearby forest temple. He studied for one year in Myanmar in 2017.

Before becoming a Bhikkhu, Phra Phillip worked as a lawyer in Washington, D.C. and did legal translation for four years in Sichuan Province, China. He is fluent in English, Spanish, Latin, and can speak basic Thai and Standard Mandarin Chinese (to HSK-2 level). He holds a dual Doctorate (JD/Ph.D) in Law and Philosophy from Indiana University and Georgetown University.
